News: September-October 2009
Our final runner of the 2009 Turf Flat season, the 2yo Jupiter Fidius, won at Musselburgh on the 28th October for his owners Tennant, Sharp & Boston. He was given a fine ride by the recently crowned Champion Apprentice Jockey, Frederick Tylicki and he saw off some fairly useful types. Jupiter is only small but had shown promise to us earlier in the season and we are delighted he has rewarded his patient owners.
The 2009 Turf Flat season has proved fruitful for the yard and our small string of Flat runners have shown great battling qualities in many of their races. They have earned themselves a well deserved break during the winter months and they will be turned out and allowed to enjoy themselves, weather permitting, of course!
We were also delighted with the run of Dream Risk at Newcastle on October 29th. This was her first run in the UK following her arrival from France and she travelled and jumped really well, only tiring in the final 2 furlongs.

A very busy and successful day for the yard on Tuesday 13th October with 2 runners at Newcastle on the flat and 2 runners over the jumps at Huntingdon. These four runners yielded 2 winners, 1 second and 1 very encouraging run.
Our first winner was Stopped Out at Huntingdon, scoring in the 2 Mile 4 Furlongs Novice Hurdle under Richie McGrath. He jumped extremely well throughout the race and was very professional in his efforts, winning by 3 lengths. He is heading in the right direction and has achieved an awful lot for a 4 yr old.
Its A Roofer also ran his heart out to finish second in the 2 Mile 4 Furlongs Novice Handicap Chase. He is only a small fella and in the closing stages just found top weight of 11st 12lbs a little too much. He jumped well throughout and proved that the ground really is the key to him.
Both of these horses are owned by the Well Oiled Partnership and we were delighted that the majority of the partners were able to attend and enjoy the day.
At Newcastle, Unawatuna took the honours in the 2 mile Handicap under a great ride from Kelly Harrison. Following up her success at Ripon, she battled very well all the way up the home straight. Unawatuna has proved so tough in her victories are we are really delighted for her owner Mr John Fairley.
Royal Flynn was the last runner of the day in the Amateur Rider Flat Race and was ridden by our stable amateur Mr Henry Brooke. He ran with a lot more encouragement and although finishing 7th, he was only beaten 5 lengths. Hoepfully he will be back in the winners enclosure before too long for his owners Paul and Jean Chapman.
Henry has really benefited from his summer in France and continues to impress with his race riding ability and we will continue to support him with rides.
Embsay Crag also continues to be a little star and ran a great race to finish 3rd in a very competitive Handicap at York. Following a slow start, he settled towards the rear of the field and seemed to enjoy passing horses on the home straight. He was always gaining ground towards the end. Rarely been out of the frame this season, he has been a dream horse for his owners the Keep The Faith Partnership.
Off the track the horses at home continue to please and we are just praying for some rain.

The last month has
proved very fruitful for the stable as, from only a handful of
runners, we have had 2 winners, 1 second and 1 third.
Embsay Crag was the first of the two winners, taking a 10f
Class 3 Handicap at Chester.
He really is an
owner's dream and has
not run a bad race this year, all he ever seems to want to do is
please. He was given an exceptionally good ride by Ian Brennan (who
is attached to the John Quinn yard) and had to overcome being boxed
in to win in a driving finish. Embsay Crag will continue to run on
the flat before a possible tilt over hurdles next season.
Unawatuna also gained a well deserved success at Ripon on
September 1st and we were especially pleased for her patient owner
Mr John Fairley who was experiencing his first success within the
UK. She was given a very positive ride by Kelly Harrison and really
battled hard at the end. It was great to get the success under her
belt after coming so close earlier on in the season.
Its A Roofer continues to run so well over fences he really
seems to have taken to jumping fences having finished 2nd and 3rd at
Sedgefield in the last couple of weeks. He is giving his owners a
lot of fun and hopefully a win isn't too far away.
The majority of the horses are back in now and there are a few
different shapes amongst them as some have enjoyed their summer
break a little too much! Apart from this, they all seem to be very
well in themselves. Some are still doing road work - walking and
trotting - which is aimed at getting the basic conditioning correct
before they are put under the increased pressure of cantering. The
rest have just started their cantering work.
As the horses get older, you'd expect them to get slightly more
sensible but this does not seem to be the case with Morgan Be
and Huka Lodge who still behave like they are the youngsters
of the yard!
Richie McGrath and Ewan Whillans are back riding out, a sure sign
that the winter jumps season is approaching.
