Everaard ran in the 2 Mile Handicap Hurdle at Wetherby on June 3rd. He has started to get his act together at home - taking him cross country schooling and varying his work has boosted his confidence and kept him fresh. He ran really well to finish second he was unlucky to come across a horse who had dropped down in the handicap and who just got the better of him. They pulled clear of the remainder of the field. He was given a good ride by Graham Lee who was deputising for Richie who is currently sidelined following his fall at Wetherby the previous week.
At Hexham on June 5th Breaking Storm contested a valuable £20k 2 Mile Handicap Hurdle. He was trying to follow up his victory at Sedgefield the previous month and was ridden by Graham Lee. He ran well to finish mid-division but found the 2 miles on the sharp side and will be stepped back up in trip as he is already proven over further. Pen Gwen ran another solid race in the Hunter Chase on the same Hexham card to finish 3rd. He has been consistent all year and was given a good ride by Henry.
Jupiter Fidius, West Stand and Honest Buck are all due to take their chance on the Flat on Wednesday 9th at Haydock and Beverley.
On the staff front Henry Brooke our amateur has left to gain further experience in France for the summer months with Guillaume Macaire as the point to point and hunter chase season is drawing to a close. He found this very beneficial last year and hopes to gain the same experience again.
The new horses from Doncaster have settled in well and are currently getting broken in whilst the horses in the fields are enjoying their holidays eating and sleeping and are looking well.
May Update.......
The end of May has given the yard a boost and lifted everyone spirits as Dream Risk won her first race over hurdles for the Keep the Faith Partnership at Cartmel. She has shown some solid form in her previous races and we were delighted that she managed to get her head in front jumping well for Graham Lee. Royal Flynn also ran a good race at Cartmel to finish 3rd under Henry Brooke in the Handicap Hurdle. Cartmel is a really unique place and if you have never been it is well worth a visit. It is filled with a fun fair, families having BBQ's and really holds a great atmosphere.
We were also delighted with the run of Mrs Eff at Market Rasen on May 16th. Named after a good friend, Mrs Foster, who also helps with the horses this home bred mare made a great debut to finish 5th staying on well at the end. She is bred to jump and stay much further so we are looking forward to her next outing.
On a different note, I visited the Doncaster National Hunt Sale last week. This sale is for young unraced National Hunt horses that are ready to hopefully progress through the ranks. I like to buy from this sale as there are plenty of value for money horses that do not have any mileage on the clock. Having had good success in the past with horses from this sale and I have just purchased another 3 youngsters and I'll be posting more details on this site in the next couple of days.
Our horses are enjoying the warmer weather. The horses in work are getting turned out regularly to relax and enjoy themselves where as those on their summer holidays are seeing their waistlines increase!
