Happy New Year from everyone at Kate Walton Racing!
The turn of the New Year has presented plenty of problems for trainers throughout the country with the current cold snap. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, there hasn't been any racing in the North for over three weeks so we have been very quiet on the runners front. It has been very disappointing for us all as we had plans in place for a number of the horses and the Christmas break is an ideal time for owners to get to the races.
On the plus side we have not missed a day's work with the horses and the horses have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The gallops in Middleham have been kept open and we have been able to access them through our own fields therefore avoiding all roads, we have also been cantering through the fields and keeping them ticking over. They seem to enjoy themselves exercising in the snow and even more so when we turn them out for a play.
The staff have done very well as they have not missed a day of work as the gritters seem to have forgotten that Middleham exists and life has been made harder for them with frozen drinkers and snowy yards. We are hoping that the thaw is on the way and that we can get them back on the track very shortly.
Looking back at 2009, it proved our most successful season both on the flat and over jumps yielding excellent results in both sphere. The yard achieved its first success at Championship level when Sitting Tennant won the Championship Bumper at Aintree on Grand National Day, it was a great day for all involved.
Morgan Be was robbed of success at the highest level having successfully won at Ayr he was just caught on the line in The Eider Chase at Newcastle.
The Well Oiled Partnership have had a great year with Stopped Out and Still At Lunch recording success for them during the season, the latter completing a hatrick of wins.
We are also lucky in that we have some nice young horses coming through Fairynuff won impressively at Catterick and we have a handful of bumper of horses who will be making their debut in 2010 with some older favourites returning from injury such as Jimmy Bond and Breaking Storm.
The yard's flat string blossomed through 2009 and the horses showed great battling qualities. Embsay Crag recorded 2 wins through the season for the Keep The Faith Partnership both in highly competitive at Chester, he has the heart of the lion and never seems to give in.
Following a setback at the beginning of the season Jupiter Fidius returned to the track in October to win a 2yr old maiden at Musselburgh.
The lady of the flat team Unawatuna also did exceptionally well winning two of her six races over 2 miles showing great resilience in her races and seems to have a real bond with her jockey Kelly Harrison.
The flat team are currently on a break at the moment with Embsay and Jupiter having been re-named 'Jedward'!
All in all 2009 was a very successful season for the yard and alot of the credit goes down to the dedicated staff and our excellent owners lets hope 2010 can be even better......
