Our prayers where perhaps answered a bit too well last month!!
I mentioned I was praying for rain for Jimmy Bond and Morgan Be for the Eider Meeting at Newcastle on the 28th February. The rain arrived but then decided to stay causing waterlogging on the track and the meeting was abandoned. There is nothing we can do about the weather but I was gutted as I felt they would both go extremely well.
However, Jimmy Bond gained compensation though at Newcastle's meeting on March 9th when he won the 2 Mile 4 Furlongs Handicap Chase in great style under Richie McGrath. This was his second run back following a spell on the sidelines and he certainly proved he still retains his ability and love for the game. Both Jimmy Bond and Morgan Be (the yard's handicap chasers) have had their training regimes varied over the past month with trips to the beach, using different gallops and going for hacks. I feel it has benefited them both and I'm glad Jimmy gained success for his ever loyal and enthusiastic owners Paul & Jean Chapman. I am again praying for the rain to arrive again next week as we intend to run Morgan Be in the Midlands National but soft/heavy ground is crucial for him.
On the same card at Newcastle Royal Flynn ran in the 2 Mile Handicap Hurdle he ran a solid race and his fast finishing fifth showed he retains his ability. He always finishes either in the frame or just outside but his day will come and he continues to be a fun horse.
Fairynuff who was previously successful at Catterick contested the National Hunt Flat race at Doncaster on March 5th. This was a very competitive race and, on ground that was probably slightly faster than ideal, he ran a very solid race to finish fifth carrying a penalty for his previous success. We were delighted with his run as his future will lie over hurdles/fences and his bumper races have been a good grounding for him.
We are still waiting for Crop Walker to make his seasonal debut for his ever patient owner Irvine Lynch. We declared him to run at Doncaster but myself, Irvine and Richie McGrath all felt that the ground would not be suitable for him and as we have waited so long for his return, we wanted to be sure everything was right for him. He will hopefully run at Ayr this weekend.
The flat turf season begins at the end of March and I am happy with how the flat team are progressing. I am hoping that Embsay Crag will run at the opening meeting at Doncaster. We have a mixture of 2yo and 3yo maidens and handicappers and I really enjoy watching the 2yos progressing.
At the same time we will have a small team for summer jumping as these horses require the better ground. Still At Lunch & Its A Roofer have returned to the yard recently and having had a nice break, are now back in work.
